Imagine that

Ball State pulled the charters of both Imagine Schools and the Timothy Johnson academy for poor academic performance. That's the way it should work. If they can't perform their basic mission, they should go out of business, even if they have air conditioning.

So now the question is who's going to pull the plug on government schools that don't perform. The answer in Indiana with Glenda Ditz in office is nobody. Kids stuck in bad schools like my former (now F rated) Harrison Hill have few viable alternatives until someone else opens another charter or private schools enlarge their capacity.

At least Wendy's body count will go back up.

Wendy's count may not go back up like she wishes. There are only 1,500 students in all charter schools. I see one-third of the students going to private schools, and another third leaving to go to out-of-district schools, i.e. EACS, NWCS, SWCS and BHS districts. I also believe a number of families will look at homeschooling options. I believe Wendy's district will only receive 500 students.

The kids going to Imagine had pretty much the same percent free and reduced lunch as FWCS (95% at Imagine Broadway.) I would think only a few would be in a position to move to another district or undertake home schooling. I think Wendy will get most of them back and that those kids will have a lot of issues, putting more downward pressure on FWCS test scores..

Evert,

Just saw how much our elected officials make to "represent" us in Indy. Why don't you start writing about reducing these salaries? Or is it just teachers that you hate?

I wasn't writing about salaries and I don't hate teachers. I just don't have any use for teachers' unions. They might as well associate with the Teamsters and save on their dues since the ISTA did such a bang up job investing their pension money. But I'd support higher pay for teachers if their was a way to measure their performance but their unions are against obective evaluations.

Note: Harrison Hill's 3rd grade teacher quit before testing? Hmmm....

Harrison Hill has really taken backward steps in the past several years. All of the stress is being put on the teachers. Active learners is an outdated concept. Now teachers are suppose to teach students that really don't have the motivation to learn. I blame Wendy, our representatives in Indianapolis, and parents that don't care to do their jobs.

So what's wrong? Don't they have uniforms at HH? Don't they have a new principal? It shouldn't be as difficult to get younger kids, who aren't into their peer culture yet, motivated like it is the older ones. My experience in the elementary schools was much better than in the high schools.

Maybe it's the old boiler we saw in every picture for their bond issue.

Or maybe they hired a new principal that is more concerned with making connections with young female teachers than providing actual leadership.

The point is that any school that chronically underperforms for whatever reason, should be closed. Turning schools around is notoriously difficult. Charter schools have a mechanism to do that. Government run "district" schools don't. They only close because of declining enrollment. You could argue for the need for keeping neighborhood schools but "choice" in FWCS already has 30% of the kids going to a school outside their normal attendance area.

What if students are not doing well, but are not underperforming?

Evert,

Are you kidding me. In Fort Wayne what charter school has turned around their low performing students? Another thing, the reason why the U.S. tests lower than other industrial nations is because every kid is forced to attend traditional types of high schools where the worse twenty percent drive our scores down. You are the Mark GiaQuinta of the right.

None in Fort Wayne so far, but plenty in other major cities like New York, New Orleans, Wasgington DC. The performance of charter schools and private schools fall along the bell curve just like those of government schools. The curves are remarkable similar. The schools on the left end of the curve should face closure, and do get closed in the charter sector.

I've never seen that happen in FWCS, except for low enrollment like Pleasant Center or who knows why with Elmhurst, maybe pissing off Wendy. You could argue it happened to Harding in EACS but they were also under the gun from the state.

But comparing me to GiaQuinta is a low blow. I'm not a lawyer so just don't send me a turnip bomb.
