Davis and Jehl for School Board

If you live in one of the contested FWCS school board districts, you may or may not know that incumbents John Peirce and Becky Hill are being challenged by Jenna Jehl and Michael Davis respectively. If you know nothing about any of them then the key to your vote should be that the JG endorsed the incumbents. After an earlier editorial encouraging people to run for the board, they then proceeded to trash those who did because they looked to be conservative.

Incumbent 32 year board "vet" Steve Corona, another JG favorite, is unchallenged in district five. Mr. "proven leadership", as his billboards said four years ago, has been sitting on the board for 32 years watching my former school district and high school go down the tubes. Like the two challenged incumbents, Corona is still ignorant about the situation in our classrooms. But since all three believe Wendy walks on water, they're more than happy to take her word for the state of the district. Ms. O'Frisco's recommendation referred to increasing pressure from the state. That's the result of no pressure from a blissfully ignorant board of cheerleaders.

Michael Davis is the owner of a software business he started. He knows the educational requirements of today's economy.  He had three kids in FWCS. He knows what's going on in the buildings. I know Mr. Davis personally and supported him with a check.

I don't know Ms. Jehl personally. She was endorsed by the Sentinel. Predictably, she was dismissed by the JG. That alone would make her the best choice to replace John Peirce.

I will have to do a little more investigation readings on these two. If they follow the Bennett line of robotic testing they will not get my vote. I am tired of watching every student lined up with each other and expected to have the same results on tests. If you work with students it is obvious that not every student is going to pass the same tests no matter what anyone says, it is never going to happen. It doesn't matter what or how they are being taught, not every student comprehends the same way, nor can be taught the same way and unfortunately Bennett has put guidelines out that are unrealistic and unreasonable.

No, they won't all perform the same, but the purpose is to see if they have mastered at least a minimum standard and to predict how they will do if they go on to some level of higher education, which is becoming increasingly important. They will have to take SAT's and/or ACT's to get into the better colleges.

College was all about passing tests, and in my time grades were heavily skewed by finals. Have they done away with finals week? Getting into grad school required another level of tests.

My problem isn't with the testing per se. We have to measure and you can't avoid being measured one way or another. It's that there aren't enough alternatives for the kids who don't do well enough academically to go to college, kids who used to get the decent jobs in manufacturing which have disapperaed.

There are plenty of alternatives for students who don't want to go to college. Unfortunately Bennett and group have tried to fit every student into the college category and it has left us with a shortage of plumbers, electricians, basically manpower workers. After working in schools for many years it is clearly evident halfway through their high school career which students are not 4 year college material. The unfortunate part of testing is that it is prohibiting students to get high school diplomas to go on to the workforce/tech/trade schools where they could be successful. Many students are "hands" on learners, NOT robotic text/note taking students. Yes FWCS still has finals week. No student can or should be measured the same and that is exactly what has happened in this state. Tests only measure what the teachers have to teach by state standards. Their are so many students who are being cheated out of a future because we cannot direct them to other alternatives other than college. Very sad for our youth. I don't even want to start discussing the ENL students. I have so much respect for them and the desire to go to our schools and then berated because they are forced to take tests they cannot even read or understand

From what I've seen in freshmen math classes, it's evident when they're in middle school that they aren't college material. But they don't have to pass the ECA's to get a HS diploma. At SSHS and Wayne20% graduate with waivers.

And there are plenty of education experts, like Diane Ravitch, who believe high schools should be about turning out good citizens and not about preparing kids for the workforce. So the whole concept of "high school" needs to be reexamined. You still need some level of literacy and numeracy to function in society, so make sure they have that at the end of middle school and take it from there.

But then what would all those high school coaches do?

BTW, there were about 8400 employees at Harvester when it closed. GE had over 10,000 at one time. Not to mention Magnavox, Phelps Dodge, Essex, Zollner, Joslyn, etc. etc. where hourly people made a decent wage. That's one hell of a lot of plumbers.

I have to agree with the teacher coach comment. I absolutely see NO benefits of their position. Every able body teacher should be in a classroom. Total waste of talent/position in MHO. As far as a shortage goes that will also happen in the future as workers grow older the younger work force will not be trained. Or at least not enough. Check various state job boards. Ohio, seeking 320 plumbers, Illinois, over 300 electrician jobs. The need is out there for students who do not wish to go to college.
Another good point. Junior Highs are not preparing students for high school. These students come in not knowing how to take simple notes, study habits are horrendous and personal responsibility is a joke. Yes many are immature, but with the state standards schools don't have time to wait for them to grow up. They must come to high school prepared to work and study to achieve the knowledge to pass exams.

With blanket social promotion through the middle schools, I doubt if we'll ever see real improvement in the high schools. But I don't believe that's a result of state policy. The Illinois legislature, for example, is talking about holding middle schools accountable for the results of the first hgh school algebra course. That wouldn't be necessary if local districts didn't prefer to just pass kids through.

This post is about school board candidates, not educational policies.
Facts before us indicate that Mark GiaQuinta pretty much controls the current board members, with the possible exception of Lisa Olinger - but she is just too nice to growl about the railroading that goes on in all matters at board meetings.

We need some old-fashioned conservative thinking infused into school board decisions and all we have are cheerleaders for the unionized workforce.

I have personally talked to Michael Davis on his walking tour this evening and I was impressed with his conservatism and competent manner.

I don't know Ms. Jehl, but I cannot vote for her anyway. Like Code Blue, my reasons for opposing Hill and Peirce is that the JG and an endorsement from GiaQuinta in the Letters to the Editor have me running as far away from those incumbents as possible.

I went over the the FWCS board website to read about the board members and I was struck by the public position pelts they carry on their belts. I do not believe that you can be active in all those organizations listed, do your 8 to 5 regular job and also do the research necessary to properly guide FWCS.

Code Blue Schools said...

The conversation tends to get off track.
I always figured being on the board would be a full time job in a district like this, with a lot of time spent in the buildings to be aware of the situation. Anyone who's been in the classrooms would know that the "A" rating the district got last year was ludicrous but they bought into it. And they kept repeating it to make voters think they deserved their bond issue.

You're exactly right, cheerleaders with pom poms between their ears. The non-profit crowd.

I consult for nonprofits and NO I am not the cheerleader. Hell, I tell people to run, run out of FWCS everyday.

Code Blue Schools said...

At least Peirce is history, but the oher one survived. If you know the non-profit crowd why don't you have a talk with Becky (over the) Hill? She's so clueless it's painful to see a well meaning lady make such an ass of herself.

Today, I went to the beach front with my children.
I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old
daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She put the shell
to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her
ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell someone!
