JG still nagging on Imagine Schools

Today it was about the Imagine board violating the "Open Meeting Law". They didn't conduct their votes at public meeting as the state law required. That's right and the net result is? How many government board and council members decide how they vote at a public meeting? None, their minds are already made up in "private" meetings. Public meetings are a meaningless formality.

Two years ago I attended a "public meeting" on the FWCS bond issue at Anthis Career Center. After listening to district employees cheering for the project for three hours the board immediately voted exactly as they would have without a public meeting. It was an orchestrated farce.

OK, Imagine, you've been caught and properly chastised by the JG. Clean up your act so Tracy and company and stop insulting our intelligence.

FYI here is mu unedited letter to the JG:
From the tone of the JG series on Imagine Schools, they seem critical of the management of the schools which has a “powerless” board. But what does a school board really do? They hire a superintendent. If the superintendent wants to stick around, he/she does what Wendy Robinson has done, recruit supportive, like-minded people to get elected to the board. The superintendent then has two main jobs, manage the school district and keep a majority of the board members happy. And don’t doubt which job is most important. Last year, a FWCS high school dropped study hall because the superintendent’s board member demanded it. And how hard is it to get elected? How many people even know who is on the school board or even voted for them? Most are elected because of name recognition or because they put out the most signs. A former FWCS board member was elected because many voters thought they were choosing a former city mayor! The larger the school corporation, the less the board is involved in its operation. Most policy comes from the employees of the corporation, not the board members.
And who is to say that Imagine Schools doesn’t have it right? At least there is no doubt as to who is in charge. If they are able to educate students and make them better test-takers, then all the better. If they cannot achieve their mission, they will be out of business. (This is, of course, unlike a public school corporation, which is still in business if it does not achieve its mission.) Elected school boards are very similar to boards elected by shareholders of large corporations…anyone want to make a case for their effectiveness recently?

Siesta Girl-

Outstanding letter! It shows that the only people who know what's really going on in the buildings are the teachers. But they are understandably highly reluctant to speak out publicly, unless they're retired. Even then there seems to be a reluctance to criticize their system, which to me is highly frustrating. It's like the saying from the traders and bankers who brought down the financial system, IBG,YBG (I'll be gone, you'll be gone).

We had a lot of retired teachers who helped with the remonstrance. Where are they now? Just sitting back and watching the district roll downhill? Or do they know better than I do that it's no use?

By the way, I think the key to getting elected to the board is to be the first name on the ballot. Can we find somene whose first name starts with an "A"?
