Might as well attack the NAACP while you're at it Karen. If you're not careful what you say, someone might try to paint you as a racist. Weren't you part of the "silent minority" at one of the meetings?
Having replenished her venom from recent attacks on Brown Mackie and Imagine Schools before that, FWCS' fanged mouthpiece today went after the new charter school legislation and the new Thurgood Marshall Academy in particular. Among the highlights of her piece are the following gems with a translation:
The legislation creates unhealthy competition - government run monopolies including failing urban school districts are good and have to be preserved forever while privately run schools are bad. Any which make a profit are unconscionable. As Reagan said, the closest thing to immortality on earth is a government bureaucracy.
Legislation undermines local authority and the "ludicrous" suggestion of a state board member that those who didn't speak at the public hearing were a "silent majority" - Well perhaps. The only people who spoke at the meeting were the "local authorities" including FWCS board president Mark GiaQuinta, a Chevy salesman who drives Toyotas. He along with Wendy and other board members have been favoring us with ludicrous drivel for years. None of their drivel has EVER elicited any criticism from Ms. Frisco.
There is a direct connection between closing of Elmhurst, Pleasant Center and Monroeville and the opening of dozens of untried charters - Dozens? Please! Thurgood Marshall is a result of the closing of Harding in EACS. Harding was actually doing the same academically as the FWCS high schools south of Coliseum. It would also have escaped a state takeover. Why it took SE Ft. Wayne parents so long to wake up to the Harding fiasco is a mystery. I asked that question at one of the meetings but didn't get a good answer. But it's the same with the fiasco at FWCS.
As far as other charters, it's the chicken and the egg question.
Troubling baggage with American Quality Charter schools - perhaps. But then FWCS has a ton of baggage as well. It's just that Ms. Frisco has NEVER expounded on that. You don't rock a sinking boat.
Legislation was passed under the guise oYf the mantle of parental choice - Karen doesn't think this is a good idea unless "parents are capable of making the best choice". In other words they are incapable of making the best choice.
Karen, if you want to do the taxpayers a real service, go back to that $119MM project and give us the details that FWCS refuses to disclose for fear of losing votes on the referendum. Show us that transparency reigns at the JG, if not at FWCS.
Happy New Year!

Is Michael S. Gouloff- Fort Wayne Allen-County Airport Authority Board President, the same person as
Michael S. Gouloff-Schenkel Shultz Architecture, CEO/Chairman? How much money a year does FWCS pay to Schenkel Shultz? Sounds like a conflict of interest if they are one in the same. Anyway you look at it Mark Giaquinta is trying to pull one of his slimeball tricks.
One and the same. The same guy who's money's been keeping "schoolboard member for life" Steve Corona on the board for 30 years. Maybe some of that $119MM will finally come his way.
But that has nothing to do with Ms. Frisco's and the JG's support for Corona. Gouloff's kids went to Canterbury with Gia Quinta's, by the way. Do like I say not as I do.
Here is the problem that I have with Marshall academy is that it is one and the same, it will not necessary improve education. If one was to really look at Canterbury, you would see that the K-8th side is not authorized by the state, and has tons of freedoms.
Gouloff's firm actually does not do very much business with FWCS regularly. Easy to check the public disclosure of all vendors that is published in the paper.
Cant say that I blame him for sending his kids to private school. When you make big $$ and want your kids to get the best, why would you send them to the county's free health clinic when you could send them to the Mayo clinic? I would do the same. There is a difference in quality if you want to invest in it.
The title of the article (Charter School Charades) cracked me up.
The public schools are the ones who are playing fast and loose with the law (it's not just in fort wayne) giving away buildings just to keep the charters from getting them (and paying cash to do so.) And at the same time they are wanting to raise our property taxesbecause they claim they needmore money.
And the charters are offering a choice, while the publics try to hide from it. And she calls the charters behavior a charade?
I read the entire article through only because I needed a good laugh.
Charter schools really don't offer choice, the state has control of what is and what is not taught. So, it's teach the test, the test, and only the test - even, in the best public schools.
Now, I am for school choice. However, I would like to see a strong private schools that would say to hell with the test, and yes with real learning! I love the Nativity Model and Cristo Reyo models that allow students an option for true learning with skills, practical application and critical thinking.
In strong schools, public and private, they don't have to teach to the test. If they give them, they're a non-event, more of an annoyance. The basics that the tests cover don't need any extra emphasis.
We'll just have to see how Marshall plays out and how they succeed (or not) where others have failed. They really started with EACS, so that district would be most affected by the loss of any students.
You are wrong! I know for fact that Northern Wells and Southwest teach the test for the whole 2nd semester, and nothing but the test.
The high schools teach courses (algebra and Language arts) with a prescribed content. The content is aligned with what the state requires them to know (standards) They then take a state test covering the content of those courses, the ECA's. If the kids can't master any more than the material the standards require, I suppose you could say they were only teaching to the test. So what? I saw only a handful of kids in five years tutoring algebra at FWCS who could have mastered any more than the standards and 50% can't even accomplish that much.
That's only two subjects. There are four or five other subjects each term that have no state tests. Science has a test but I don't know if that's counted in the grading system. Do you object to having state standards in math and L/A? I've seen the math ECA and it seems like a reasonable test.

Didn't they get $1.5 million of the $2.5 million last year for the Wayne HS so called up grades? Isn't Schenkel Shultz the architect for Citizens Square? How did they miss the elevaters being in such sad shape?
Maybe there should be a Ethics Code for the FWCS School Board. People should know if certain members are getting kickbacks.
Corona has been getting contributions from architects and for years. Don't know about Hill, Peirce (both got money from FWEA) or Lebamof.

$50 thousand of arch. work for a $1.1 million project? Sorry that is very hard to believe.
That would be about 5%, which may be reasonable for that type of project. They've put in 25% for the bond issue. Almost half the work is for hvAC and the rest is supposed to be for fixing what's broke structurally. 25% looks way out of line.

Looks like the bottom half of the list is associated with the cost of bonding. The items in the top half, all needed to fix what's broken, are known within .01% ?
I'm impressed. With that kind of precision why do they need a 10%contingency? Should it be 10.00% ?
