Nikki Kelly of the JG reported today that FWCS will be one of six Indiana districts working with the IDE to develop a merit based teacher evaluation system. The new system will consider improvement in standardized test scores as part of the evaluation, although how much weight they will get is not clear. Also unclear is what will be used for those teaching subjects which are not covered by standardized test.
In spite of the difficulty and their past resistance to the reforms, participation is a good move for FWCS. Being part of the process, they can influence the product with the participation of teachers and administrators and get better buy in from both. And by working with the IDE they'll get points for cooperation, which will help in keeping SSHS and NSHS from being converted to charters if their scores don't improve this year.

As a teacher, I might know I had my best-ever year teaching, but for a variety of reasons, it will not show up in student performance.
I believe the Vandebilt U study offered cash incentives for higher test scores, like a professional athletic contract. I agree that's not the way it should be done. In a corporate system, yearly salary increasea are tied to performance, so that over time the better employees are higher paid.
The accumulated data also gives management an objective way to rank employees for retention / layoff decisions instead of seniority.

I just would ask anyone who cosiders teaching to reflect on their motivation for doing so and to know what they're getting into. I considered getting a certificate after I retired from the oil company. After subbing a few times, it didn't take long to see it wouldn't work. Fortunately, I didn't need to do it for the paycheck.
The problem with testing will be the teachers who throw a curve - those who are outliers in the process and raise scores off the charts. Those teachers, from what I see in FWCS and EACS, will be ousted immediately, as don't provide mediocre results.
