FWCS can't be fixed

If events over the last year or two haven't convinced you that FWCS is going down the same path as every other urban school district, you can read it into today's Karen Frisco's JG editorial. Karen laments all the failed reforms that have been attempted like vouchers, charter schools, accountability testing, ending social promotion, NCLB, etc. She even faults Bill and Melinda Gates for spending their billions trying to fix urban schools. Somehow that's undemocratic because it takes away the power of democratically elected school boards. As if these idiots (Mark Twain's observation) know better than Bill and Melinda. Stop wasting your money guys and just let taxpayers keep wasting their money.

Notice that nobody, including Karen and especially our school district, ever comes straight out and admits that urban public education doesn't work, can't be fixed and inevitably ends up in suburban flight. So there's no point in criticising or trying to push the schools into doing anything different. And we could accept that if they weren't spending half our state tax money and patting themselves on the back with one hand at board meetings while they're picking our pockets with the other. If we could be sure that FWCS wouldn't go out with a $2 billion dollar building flame out like Kansas City, we could just ignore them and let nature take its course. Better just to leave them alone, if they would leave our pocketbooks alone.

I am not sure if Fort Wayne's public schools are doomed to failure because other urban school districts have gone down that path. Fort Wayne is, or at least was until recently, a very unique little city. Twenty years ago the high schools in Fort Wayne were run as a loose confederation of schools. Sure there were some ties to the central office, but the schools still had a degree of independence. In the past ten years this independence has eroded and been replaced by a stronger central office. Now this would not be bad if we had the right leader at the helm, but with the wrong leader it will lead to a horrible end. What we need to do is bring back community schools and scale down the size and influence of the central office.

On a side note, I am glad that those in the news media are starting to question Arne Duncan's abilities to serve as an effective Secretary of Education. What is ironic is that Mrs. Karen Frisco had the audacity to criticize Dr. Duncan. Doesn't Karen know that Dr. Robinson and Dr. Duncan eat from the same educational garden? For Karen's sake I hope Wendy doesn't read the article. If Wendy does she might fire Karen.

Spencer- I don't know of any urban district that hasn't failed. What makes this one is unique? Don't you think we first have to do much better (become competetive with the suburban districts) in K-3 before anything improves in the middle and high schools. Being one of the "quants" Karen disparaqes in her article, I haven't seen any data that third grade reading scores are getting any better.

Personally, I wouldn't mind spending some money to see if that can be done (at a few schools before expanding it across the district). I just have the feeling they're are afraid to try it and fail, and proving there's no hope.

I thought after reading Frisco's rants last week that the paper looked as though it is getting ready to be "one" instead of "two". Perhaps they are considering to go to one paper...she even endorsed one of George W.'s former people and her book on education. hmmmmmm

Last night, 21 Alive ran a piece on Elmhurst and Wayne.

In the video,it seems Melissa Long is taking Mark GiaQuinta and his famous quote to task.

Well, ironically he may be right because now with Elmhurst closed, if Wayne is also closed, they would have nothing but two other failing high schools to send kids to south of Coliseum. So the only option may be to turn it into a charter school. We can only hope.

But as Krista Stockman said (with a straight face!), they've been proactive by playing musical chairs with the principals of Wayne and South Side, both failing schools. Not to worry. Just keep giving them you tax money.

They have plans for the EHS building...doesn't opening a Charter give you qualifications for "Race to the Top Funds"?? Ask FWCS they know.
